FAQs

  • Wool fibers have a natural wavy or scaly structure. In thicker types of wool, these fibers can irritate the skin because they tend to stick out from the fabric and cause a scratching sensation when they touch the skin. The coarser the fibers, the more likely they are to cause itching.

  • Merino Wool
Merino wool is known to be one of the softest and least itchy types of wool. This is because merino fibers are very fine, usually between 17 and 22 microns, making them softer against the skin. The fine merino fibers are also more flexible and lay flatter against the skin, reducing the risk of irritation.

    Alpaca Wool
Alpaca wool is also an excellent type of wool for people who are sensitive to itching. It does not contain lanolin and has a softer fiber structure than traditional sheep wool, making it hypoallergenic and less likely to irritate the skin. Alpaca fibers are also very lightweight and smooth, making them extra soft.

    Cashmere
Cashmere is a very luxurious and soft fiber, and although it is technically not wool from sheep but from cashmere goats, it is considered one of the least itchy types of natural fibers. With a micron count of around 15-19 microns, cashmere fibers are incredibly soft and gentle on the skin.

  • Unlike other wool fibers, alpaca is not as itchy, especially because the fine and sleek alpaca fiber has a smooth surface and also lacks lanolin. Lanolin is a natural oil that can be irritating and cause itching and discomfort.

  • Due to its exceptional color reflection and strength (stronger than steel), mohair is also known as the "Diamond Fiber." It is as warm as wool but lighter, making mohair garments ideal travel clothes since they also do not wrinkle.

  • Common natural fibres well suited to those with sensitive skin include silk, cashmere, cotton and fine merino. These fibres can all be sourced with a low micron count, making them soft to the touch. They also have breathability and absorbency in common, making them practical and comfortable for sensitive skin.
